I have been in SL for a while now, and over the years the same comments come up over and over again, one perennial favourite is shapes, other peoples shapes.
Back in 2008 I remember the self important humourless people going around telling people inworld that they were too tall, even groups dedicated to not being tall, wore titlers with YOU ARE TOO TALL on them and who banged on about how their avatars were ‘realistic’ and everyone else was wrong. (except, if they were realistic why went they slightly asymmetrical or flawed in any way?)
Recently it’s moved away from telling people off inworld and moving it over to plurk, flickr, forums and blogs, outing people who have ‘bad’ shapes, taking images from flickr or their blogs without permission and using them as bad examples. Now, there are a lot of shape trends I am not a fan of, 100 legs, 0 bodyfat, giant hips etc. but I really don’t care what other people choose to do with their avatar shapes, and it certainly ain’t my business to publically abuse them.
It does make me laugh though, the people screeching the loudest about how other people are doing it wrong only seem to be about +/- 3 points from the Girl Next Door shape in the library, like this gem here is your imagination really that narrow?
Most of the time it’s people moaning that their personal preferences are not universal, squinnying about small eyes when they have giant bug eyes. If you really want to criticise people, there are so many more things you can do, the amount of blogs out there with poor quality pictures, no credits and no effort put in them is a much bigger SLcrime than a shape you don’t like.
